The Nikon N2000 — sold as the F-301 outside North America — was Nikon's first SLR with a built-in motor winder, introduced in 1985. The film advances automatically after every frame, so there is no wind lever at all, and the camera handles more like the autofocus bodies that followed than the mechanical Nikons before it.

It is a manual-focus camera. It offers program, aperture priority and manual exposure, with a readout in the finder showing the camera's settings. It is fully electronic and runs on AAA batteries in the grip, so it does nothing without them. On the other hand, the batteries are easy to find anywhere.

The lens mount is the regular Nikon F mount, and it takes AI and AI-S Nikkors, which are easy to find and still reasonably priced. Many autofocus Nikkors with an aperture ring will mount and work as manual-focus lenses.

The N2000 isn't a classic in the way the mechanical Nikons are, which is exactly why it's worth considering. Prices are low, the controls are simple, and it pairs well with good glass. With a 50mm and Portra 400, it is an easy and inexpensive first Nikon.
